Have you ever been confused about the terminology associated with alcohol? We've been there! Whether it's your first drink or your last, here are some tips and tricks to navigate the #Bar scene and help you at #The5thPour!

Types of Alcohol
Before we get into specific terminology, it's important that you know what exactly it is you're drinking!
Proof = The amount of alcohol in a drink
Whiskey = A spirit of fermented corn, wheat, rye, or barley; 80-160 proof
Gin = A spirit distilled form grain; often with berries
Vodka = A spirit made from potatoes
Wine = Fermented grape juice
Beer = Fermented yeast malts
Mixed Drink Terminology:
Here are the best words you need to know when ordering a cocktail from the bar. This list has been compiled by our very own bartenders!
On The Rocks = Over ice
Straight Up = Without ice
Chaser = A softer or non-alcoholic drink to wash down harder liquors
Shot = Straight servings of alcohol
With A Twist = An added citrus peel for the rim of your glass
Dirty = Made with olives (usually martinis)
Mocktail/Virgin = A mixed drink without alcohol
Beer Terminology:
Hops = Herb added to beer to remove bitterness
High Gravity = Stronger beers; higher alcohol content
Ale = Bitter beers; higher alcohol content
Lager = Lighter beers
Growler = Lightweight, jug-like container for craft beers

We hope this helps! Remember, it's okay not to know everything about the liquor world. At #The5thPour, our staff is here to help you drink safely and responsibly, while also having a good time! You can always ask any of our bartenders for help about what to order or for their favorites! We hope you have a great time!
